Got no feeders? No problem! catch some!

Cant feed your tarantulas just because you ran out of  feeders?
Dont worry! all you need is some fruit and "Diskarte" :)

Try catching some Fruit Fly :)
well, may sees them gross but my tarantulas love them and these fruitflly are Gutloaded! :) I let them eat some fruits before i catch them :)

Here is a simple picture of my Fly Catcher v1.0.0

I used ripe mango as bait for these flies and they just cant resist its sweet scent then the plastic to catch them. I just folded it twice to give a circular opening for flies to get trapped. Then, I just tied the plastic to the stick and leave it for a while and wait for some Fruit fly (I tied the plastic so that the fly will get used with the plastic above him/her.
Then if some flies are in below the plastic slowly, lower your plastic and trap the fly :)
Then the last thing you should do is to Break its wings. One wing will do, it can no longer fly.
Then say Bon Appétit to your Tarantula =)

Why Tarantulas?

“WHY TARANTULAS?”

pros:

1. You don’t need to walk a tarantula in the morning and at night.

2. No need to give it a bath. NEVER.

3. Tarantulas don’t shit on the floor and to anywhere else but inside their enclosure. You won’t even notice that they shit.

4. They don’t make loud noises. They don’t smell.

5. It’s OK NOT to feed your tarantula up to a month. Just leave them with a source of water.

6. Tarantulas don’t have lice and ticks though they are prone to mites. But mites are just fine in controlled population.

7. You don’t have to give them vitamins nor take them to the Vet.

8. Tarantulas don’t take up much space in your house. Good pet suggestion for yuppies, busy individuals, and for those who have a small residence like me.

9. Very low maintenance. You don’t have to clean their tanks regularly.

10. Fulfilling.

cons: (just to be fair)

1. ADDICTING. Once started, you will then start dreaming of having all the species available around which will lead you to impulse buying.

2. Impulse buying will surely minimize the “life span” of your pay check.

3. Keeping tarantulas means keeping (breeding) different kinds of insects like crickets (males’ chirps are irritating when place inside the house); roaches (some roaches really stink like B. Lateralis); and worms (which will make your mother and sister scream) because it’s not practical spending a lot of money to buy feeders every week, or worst, everyday.

4. Tarantulas won’t love you back. They won’t cuddle you nor play fetch with you.

5. You can’t train your T’s to do tricks like “sit”, “play dead”, or “kill him”.

6. Won’t guard your house not even your room.

7. You will unconsciously be an instant ”basurero” when you have a lot of T’s in your captivity. You will collect gravy dishes; tissue rolls; deli cups; tree barks; branches; broken terra cotta; leaves; rocks; pebbles; even plastic spoons because there will always be a possible use for those junk. Yes, there will always be.

8. You wouldn’t allow anyone spray insecticides and air fresheners near your room. Good luck to mosquitoes and house roaches.

9. Your girlfriend, wife, or any special partner will be jealous to your inverts weeks after your first purchase.

10. People will avoid you because they’ll think you’re a weirdo.

Top 10 tarantulas for beginner

These are my top 10 recommend tarantulas for beginners!

So if you are new to the hobby better consider my top 15 list.  before i made this list, what i considered is their Looks, Temperament, size and their Price.

1. Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (Greenbottle Blue Tarantula)
This terrestrial tarantula is a good start for beginners since Gbb (Greenbottle Blue Tarantula)  one of the most beautiful tarantula of all, and much easier to take care unlike other beautiful species like Balfouri  and P. metallica are both "wallet terminators." Gbb can be bought today at around P1,200 only plus this guy over here has good appetite! feed it and he will eat it!. Although when its still a sling (spider ling), its speed is a bit fast so try to move slowly every time you handle this guy.

2. Grammostola rosea (Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula)
Grammostola rosea or also known as "Chilean rose" are classic it is very docile and calm that makes a good tarantula for beginners! Chilean rose tarantula hates wet substrate and tends to avoid it. If their substrate is wet they tend to hang up on their enclosures until it dries so better keep your substrate dry! Aside from being docile and calm this tarantula is like Garfield - Loves to do nothing =)

 3. Brachypelma smithi (Mexican Red Knee Tarantula)
Well have you seen this guy on Television? well i do! i saw this on a commercial when a girl is screaming, so i thought "wow this is cool! i can scare my sister!" so that's how i started in this hobby hehe =) aside from i saw it on T.V this tarantula has good looks! right?? aside from that its a bit cheap pricing , the only thing i hate about this guy is that it grows slow, but it can live for more than 20 years! (female)

4.Mexican Redleg (Brachypelma emilia)
Oh, another tarantula from the brachypelma genus! actually many brachypelma made it here on our top 15 list, Why? because its beautiful, all they care is not you! only food and water! Joke! (no special requirments, easy to handle and can be bought easily. I recommended this Redleg for being Docile and and rarely flicks hair. This grows slow but has a long lifespan just like the Red Knee (B. Smithi) its easy to take care of this  guy, just give his water dish and food, The substrate a bit dry, spray some water on the other half and let him choose his place =)

5.Brachypelma Boehmi (Mexican Fireleg)

What can i say about this dude? Actually i should have put this guy on number 4 but i replaced it with Emilia since when it comes to beauty Boehmi is better but this guy loves to kick some hair! and i hate it xD but still this is a good Tarantula for beginners, Catching some hair is part in the hobby =)

6. Brachypelma Klaasi (Mexican Pink tarantula)
This tarantula has lovely pink color and good temperament its docile but a bit nervous, its almost the same with boehmi, boehmi just maded higher rank since boehmi is cheaper than this mexican pink

7. Grammostola pulchiripes (Chaco Golden Knee Tarantula)
Chaco golden knee is a classic tarantula, it had been a hobby in some time. It makes a good pet since it is docile and calm and has beautiful markings on its leg. This guy also has a good appetite but be careful not to over fed it, sometimes Taratulas die when molting if they are over fed. Golden knees can grow up to 8inches making it good to look at and can impress your guest at home!

8.Grammostola pulchra (Brazilian Black)
Will you agree if i will tell you that "black looks good"? well for me yes!  when i was still a beginner one of the tarantula i wanted to own is the Thailand black but since it's aggressive i tried to find an alternative, and this Brazilian Black caught my eye! its a beauty, has good size of 6 inches and aside from that it is Docile. its a bit pricey but i assure you its price worth it and owning one wont make you regret.

9. Brachypelma albopilosum (Curly Hair Tarantula)
Well this one is very common to all hobbyist because of its cheap price. This tarantula doesnt have that good color combination but what i love about Curly hair tarantulas is their Gold colored carapace they are docile and easy to handle, Grows slow usually takes 2 years to be an adult but has a long lifespan (female.)

10. Lasiodora parahybana (Brazilian Salmon Pink Tarantula)
Most hobbyist would love to own a Goliath may you too would like one right?? so why? maybe because that it is big that it can grow up to 12inches. Well if Size Matters, why dont you consider The Brazilian Salmon Pink Tarantula? this guy grows fast and can grow about 10 inches (although mine is only 8-9 inches) making this a good start. Others say that it is considered that can be handled. but be carefull, it turns defensive when reaching the size of around 6 inch so repect this dude.

Top 15 MUST KNOW about tarantulas

Top 15 MUST KNOW about tarantulas

1. Other tarantulas can live in colonies. (communal setup)

    f. With the exception of a few species, most tarantulas lead solitary lives. but the Poecilotheria and Holothele incei are good species to keep as colonies! You can give them large food about twice their size and they will unite to bring it down!

2. How do tarantulas find their food?

Vibrations. Despite eight eyes on top of the carpace, tarantulas are sight-impaired and rely on surface vibrations made by a nearby moving target to eat. Pit viper snakes use heat to locate a meal.

3. Female tarantulas are blessed with a lifespan that is longer than males:

with 20 years or more. Female tarantulas living up to 30 years is not uncommon. Females are also the recommended pet for tarantula owners, as the male will make every attempt to escape during mating season.
The Brachypelma smithi has long life

4. Tarantulas can build webs.

    t. Tarantulas, like all spiders, have spinnarets and can make silk webs. Of course their size makes it impossible to hang in the air. The males make webs on the ground to lay sperm for mating, while the female creates eggsacs.

5. For many people starting out in having a pet tarantula, this mild species would be an excellent start:

The  Chilean Rose tarantula is very docile and can sometimes be held without them flicking hair at you. Other excellent starters include the Curly Hair and the Antillies Pinktoe. Of course, regarding any predatory species, caution is always recommended. See For Beginner List

6. For most humans, being bitten by a tarantula means:

Nothing worse than a bee sting. While there are some species that have a nasty bite, unless you have an allergic reaction, tarantulas are for the most part, harmless. Most tarantulas will not inject venom as a warning...they save that for dinner.

7. There are basically two types of tarantula, the Terrestrial and Arboreal:

Terrestrial, ground dwelling tarantulas are more to burrowing such as the Acanthoscurria antillensis (Antilles Pink Patch Tarantula) Arboreal. Arboreal, the 'tree-dwelling' spiders. Between the two, the arboreals are faster, more aggressive and more likely to survive a fall like the Avicularia Metallica (Metallic Pinktoe Tarantula)

8. By and large (no pun intended), the largest tarantula, and largest spider overall, is Theraphosa blondi ( Goliath Bird-eater Tarantula).
The aggressive Goliath Bird-eaters are not only capable of catching and eating small birds, they also eat frogs, lizards, bats and the occasional snake. The Bird-eater has an average legspan of 10-12 inches (about 25 cm.) and can cover an average sized dinner plate...or your computer screen!

9. While juvenile tarantulas are victim to such predators as preying mantises, scorpions and other spiders, the main predator of the adult tarantula is this:

Wasp. Specifically, the Pepsis or Tarantula Hawk Wasp, which can paralyze the tarantula without actually killing it and deposit an egg on the living host. When the egg hatches, the larva will eat the tarantula before developing into a new wasp. Tarantulas also make good meals for coatimundis and roadrunners. Some people will even suggest roasted tarantulas are delicious...if you remove the fangs, hair and poison sacs!.

10. What is the purpose of hair on a tarantula's body?

-Defense. Most tarantulas, particularly the 'New World' , posses irritating or 'urticating' hair with barbs that can be ejected at an enemy when threatened. The 'Old World' compensate their lack of hair with aggressive posturing and displays of force.

11. Adult tarantulas MUST do this at least once a year:

-Molt. It is through the process of shedding their skin that tarantulas can regrow body parts lost in fighting or evading enemies. A tarantula after molting is extremely vulnerable (even the fangs can bend) and requires at least a week or so to regain full strength. For females, the molting process may continue for a lifetime (see above for a female's lifespan).

12. The most common medical crisis for any pet tarantula is this:

-Falling. While arboreal types can fall from a greater distance, any fall might mean a break in the exoskeleton and the spider bleeds to death. A close second is breaks that occurr during molting. Injuries can be prevented by designing the cage so that the space between the lid and the surface of the substrate is no longer than the tarantula's legspan, or a little more.

13. In lieu of a web, tarantulas like this for a shelter:

-Burrow. Whether they are obligate (build their own hole) or opportunistic (find an existing hole), tarantulas prefer burrows. When constructing a shelter, you should provide them with as much as five inches of good solid soil to dig in.

14. Tarantulas obtain moisture from their victims.

    - Any proper tarantula owner should always provide a water dish. Depending on the species see their Caresheet, you will also want to gently mist the tank every so often to keep up the humidity. Tarantulas native to a desert region probably only need to be misted once a week lightly, and tarantulas found in the rainforest should be misted 2 or 3 times a week.

15. Tarantulas have re-tractable claws, just like cats!

Theraphosa blondi ( Goliath Bird-eater Tarantula)

Theraphosa blondi (Goliath Bird-eater Tarantula)
This new world terrestrial tarantula is considered as the largest tarantula in the world because of its remarkable 10-12 inches leg span. It currently holds the place in the book of Guinness World Records for the largest spider and is powerful enough to feed on frogs, toads, lizards, mice and snakes.
Tarantula Information
Regions Found: Venezuela, Northern Brazil, Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname.
Class: Terrestrial
Longevity: Reach maturity in 3-5 years and females can live to 25 years (Female)
Adult Size: 10-12inches
Temperament: Very Aggressive
Urticating Hairs: Yes
Venom Potency: Strong and painful
Brachypelma smithi Housing Requirements
Tarantula Housing: Floor space is more important than height, a deep substrate should be provided for burrowing. A good retreat is required, maybe a few in strategic places.
Temperature: 24-28°C (75-86°F)
Humidity: 80%
Special Requirements: Humidity needs to be increased near a moult to prevent problems

Arboreal

Arboreal tarantulas are 'tree-dwelling' spiders. compared to terrestrial tarantulas, the arboreals are faster, more aggressive and more likely to survive a fall. the Avicularia and "Pokies" (Poecilotheria) species are popular arboreal tarantulas =)

What is New World and Old World tarantulas?

New World Tarantulas or American variety,  most do posess irritating or 'urticating' hair with barbs that can be ejected at an enemy when threatened (a bald spot on the abdomen or tail indicates a nasty temperment). Such as Brachypelma Vagans

The 'Old World Tarantulas' or European species compensate their lack of hair with aggressive posturing and displays of force such as the Chilobrachys huahini
